Woman of the Week
Lauryn Hill, otherwise known as Ms. Lauryn Hill, has been one of my favorite female artists for a long time now. She started her music career as a songwriter and vocalist for a hip hop group called the Fugees when she was just a teenager. The group soon gained attention from the hip hop world after releasing their second album which incorporated aspects of reggae and old school R&B. After their adaptation of “Killing Me Softly With His Song” by Roberta Flack, they won their first Grammy for best R&B performance of the year in 1997. This award led to Lauryn Hill’s increasing recognition as a solo artist as she released her first album titled The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill a year later. Her lyrics speak on the mistreatment that black women face within our contemporary society. In an article published by the Bates College newspaper, Amanda Edge writes, “it is Ms. Hill’s love letter to Black women, reminding us of our strength and the power that we hold though the world constantly tells us otherwise.” (Edge 2023). Her dedication to her musical practice and her willingness to speak out about pressing issues through the music that she makes has inspired me as an opinionated girl growing up in a world that could benefit from some change. If you haven’t already, go listen to some Lauryn Hill.
